Death Registration Process

Understanding the Process

When a death occurs, initiating the registration process is an essential step. While our team at Regency Funeral Directors provides comprehensive support and guidance throughout, registering the death requires specific actions that fall outside the funeral director's scope.

Time Frame and Participants

Typically, a death must be registered within five days, unless under coroner's investigation, which might extend the period. The registration itself should be completed by specific individuals, including:

  • A relative or executor
  • Anyone present during the death
  • The premises' occupier where the death occurred
  • The person arranging the funeral

Essential Documents and Appointments

To register a death, specific documents are necessary. These include the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) issued by the medical examiner and the deceased's birth certificate and medical card if available. Our team is readily available to guide you regarding the registration location and can assist in scheduling appointments.

Utilising the Tell Us Once Scheme

Opting for the Tell Us Once scheme at the time of registration is recommended. This scheme enables notifying relevant authorities about the change in circumstances after a death, streamlining communication and saving time.

Registrar's Interview

During the registration meeting, the registrar will collect vital details including the date and place of death, the deceased's personal information, and other specifics required for statistical purposes. You will have the opportunity to review and confirm the recorded information before it's officially documented in the register book.

Post-Registration Process

Upon completing the registration, you'll receive essential documents such as a 'green form' allowing funeral arrangements, a form for social security purposes, and the option to purchase certified copies of the entry (death certificates) if needed. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to remove the deceased's details from mailing lists by completing a provided card.
